Roots Tour 4 stars
Before we left for Gambia I read the book “Roots” by Alex Haley, which describes the author´s journey to trace his family history to the village of Juffureh, where his ancestor Kunta Kinte was captured by the slave traders. It´s a very moving story and back in the 70s the book and especially the tv series played an important role to raise people´s awareness about the history of the slave trade.
To get to Juffureh you can take a ferry from Banjul to Barra and then a taxi to the village. There are also many companies organising a Roots tour.
Our guide did a good job of telling the story and we also had a chance to meet one of Kunta Kinte relatives, Binta, a sweet lady who patiently answered our questions. It was her husband that provided Hayley with much of the family history.
