Whale Watching: Fly or Sail?
Kaikoura on the east coast of New Zealand’s South island is famous for the opportunity it presents to experience whales up close. Whale watching is a major tourist business in town and the two main ways to experience the gentle giants (other than standing on the beach with some binoculars) is either to take a cruise or to fly out over the sea from Kaikoura’s small airstrip. Both provide a unique experience of the animals but it’s worth bearing in mind that an altitude minima is imposed on the flights (I chartered an aircraft and flew myself so learned about this first hand) so photographs taken from the air without a zoom might be a bit disappointing.
