more food in Klaipeda, Lithuania 4 stars
On Saturday nights, musicians playing saxophone and accordion provide a great background for dinner at Aneka’s restaurant in the Theatre Square in Klaipeda. Authentic Lithuanian dishes including cepeline, as well as the best steak in town are on the menu which is also in English and waiters speak good English. This is a great place to go with friends. The windows look onto the cobbled square to the statue of German poet Simon Dach’s famous character, Aneka, and to the balcony where Hitler gave a speech in 1941. In wintertime, the town Christmas tree is just outside. After dinner, stroll up the canal for 5 minutes to the Memelis pub for a pint of their excellent beer, brewed on the premises. Or you could sit at a table with your own tap and a refill your glass at your leisure. A small computer above displays how much you have drunk and the cost. A good example of Klaipeda’s German heritage.

Klaipeda, good and not so good food 4 stars
The Navalis Hotel in Hercus Manto street in Klaipeda serves really good food in the bar at reasonable prices. Try their Mulligatawny soup, rich with coconut cream and chicken, followed by risotto. Not particularly Lithuanian but very good, warm and great service. Another must is a trip to the 20th floor of the Klaipeda Hotel to the VivaLaVita Restaurant where you get a splendid view of the port, the lagoon, the Curonian Spit and the Baltic. The food is over fancy and over priced, but an arbata (tea) or hot chocolate gives you time to watch the ships appearing on the horizon and steaming towards the port, being escorted through the mouth of the lagoon and up to the port. The large ferries that travel to Scandinavia and the many visiting cruise ships are worth seeing.
